Narodziny rzeki

Z tym urzekającym miejscem związana jest legenda. Głosi ona o pięknej dziewczynie, imieniem Lana, która zakochała się w przystojnym młodzieńcu Dobrzynie. Nie dane jej jednak było go poślubić. Zrozpaczona nie mogła powstrzymać potoku łez. Spadały one na miękką ziemię, aż nagle ona sama podzieliła rozpacz dziewczyny – i rozlała źródłem rzekę, Łynę. Rezerwat „Źródła Rzeki Łyny” to położony w głębokim wąwozie źródliskowy obszar, z którego wypływa wiele strumieni, dających początek Łynie. Miejsce jest tak malownicze, jak doliny górskich potoków. Panuje tu swoisty mikroklimat. Nawet w najgorętsze dni wystarczy znaleźć się blisko źródeł, by poczuć ożywczy chłód. Zupełnie jakby działał tam super wydajny klimatyzator.

Osobliwością rezerwatu jest występowanie zjawiska erozji wstecznej wód wypływających ze źródeł. Wymywane piaski spływają po nieprzepuszczalnych iłach, wynoszone w dół wąwozu, dzięki czemu następuje ciągłe cofanie się źródeł Łyny. To unikatowe zjawisko niespotykane na nizinach. O niepowtarzalności tego niewielkiego obszaru świadczy współistnienie wielu elementów środowiska o wyjątkowych cechach. Najważniejsze z nich to urozmaicona rzeźba terenu i głęboko wyrzeźbiona rynna rzeki Łyny oraz bogata flora i fauna. Połączenie kilkunastu wypływów daje tu początek największej rzece Warmii i Mazur .

Najwyżej usytuowany punkt w rezerwacie znajduje się na wysokości 190 m n.p.m., dno wąwozu w najwyższym punkcie źródeł rzeki Łyny leży na wysokości około 150 m n.p.m. Powierzchnia rezerwatu porośnięta jest lasem liściastym, w wieku 120-140 lat. Stałymi mieszkańcami rezerwatu są sarny, przechodnimi- jelenie i łosie. Profesor Stanisław Czachorowski do źródeł Łyny po raz pierwszy wybrał się ponad 30 lat temu. Opowiadając o początkach Łyny twierdzi, że nawet z perspektywy tych trzech dziesięcioleci zmiany w rzeźbie terenu przy źródliskach są bardzo znaczne. A przecież źródła Łyny biją co najmniej od 10 tysięcy lat…
