Pamiętamy o ogrodach

Niewiele zostało miejsc w Polsce, takich jak Wirty. Początki tego najstarszego leśnego arboretum datują się na lata siedemdziesiąte i osiemdziesiąte XIX w. Wysadzono wtedy pierwsze obce gatunki drzew, co było związane z próbami wprowadzenia do lasów europejskich drzew szybko rosnących z innych części świata. Arboretum składa się z dwóch części – leśnej i parkowej. Kolekcja w części parkowej powstała w wyniku wysadzania drzew i krzewów rzędami wzdłuż dróg oddzielających kwatery szkółkarskie. Część leśna obejmuje powierzchnię ok. 40 ha i znajdują się na niej powierzchnie doświadczalne z introdukowanymi gatunkami. Próby zakładano głownie z gatunków iglastych, a pierwsze powierzchnie doświadczalne wysadzono w latach 1890-1897 przez miejscowego leśniczego Adama Putricha przy współpracy wybitnego profesora Adama Schwappacha. Obecnie zgromadzona kolekcja drzew i krzewów liczy 149 gatunków iglastych i 335 liściastych. Arboretum przylega do największego na Kociewiu jeziora – Borzechowskiego o powierzchni 350 ha.
